The 582 room resort, which boasts a 360 room hotel, 326 guest rooms, thirty-four suites, twenty two-bedroom bungalows, fifty three-bedroom ocean view casitas and thirty-two villas, is located on more than one hundred acres in Rancho Palos Verdes on a majestic seaside cliff.
Terranea (pronounced ter-a-NAY-a) was designed to "produce a destination resort that is an elegant blend of authentic Mediterranean design, coupled with the ecological and aesthetic characteristics of the natural habitat of this rare coastline location." The area known as Rancho Palos Verdes comes from Cañada de Palos Verdes which means canyon of green trees.
One of our favorite things about Terranea is the Discovery Trail, a bluff-top trail that connects miles of coastal trails and runs along the seaside edge of the resort property. The views are incredible whether you hike the trail down to the ocean and seaside cove or hike up to the top of the cliffs for a look at Catalina Island and Pointe Vincente Lighthouse.
Terranea Resort was formerly the site of Marineland of the Pacific where the popular Lloyd Bridges television series Sea Hunt was filmed. Scenes from movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie’s Angels, Fun with Dick and Jane, Aviator and Pearl Harbor have also been filmed here.
Terranea's amenities include three heated swimming pools with private cabanas and food service, a 140-ft waterslide, children’s splash zone, two hot tubs, a fire pit, a Children’s Center with interactive programs, boutique retail shops, a Business Center and a full concierge staff.
For golfers, The Links at Terranea is an award-winning 9-hole, par 3 oceanfront course, with a short game practice area with chipping and putting greens. The Links at Terranea focuses on "three areas that are vital to the growth of golf: time, affordability and enjoyability." The Trump National Golf Club is located three miles south of Terranea.
The Spa at Terranea offers customized wellness treatments for resort and day visitors. It has twenty-five treatment rooms, 25,000 square feet of outdoor space with ocean view terraces, hot tubs and Spa pool, a spa cafe, manicure and pedicure stations, hair and beauty salon services, a retail outlet with custom spa products, separate men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor relaxation areas, and a 5,000-square-foot fitness facility.
We found Terranea’s restaurants to be exceptional. Our dinners at the Catalina Kitchen were easily the best we have enjoyed in the Los Angeles area. As far as atmosphere, the oceanfront location is simply stunning.
Other dining options on site include Mar’sel - a simple, modern representation of California cuisine with herbs and produce grown on property in the chef’s herb and vegetable garden and Nelson’s - regional favorites presented in a casual atmosphere while you relax by outdoor fire pits and enjoy the scenic view of the famous Point Vicente Lighthouse.
The Terranea Grill, Cielo Point, Lobby Bar, Living Room, Terrace, and Sea Beans Coffee Boutique offer multiple options for good food in a more relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed a simple lunch of burgers and fries on the patio of the Terranea Grill. The food, service and ocean view were all exceptional.
Another wonderful added touch in the Terranea design is the inclusion of fire throughout the grounds. The lobby includes a large and welcoming, stone fireplace where guests relax and enjoy quiet conversation. Fire pits, scattered strategically on the verandas and outside seating areas, offer a perfect setting for an evening glass of wine or a post-sunset meditation.
