Adrenalin Junkie and Sports Enthusiast Fulfillment in Vero Beach FL
A Sportsman’s and women’s paradise, Vero Beach and surrounding waterway and land-based excursion operators offer varied athletic recreational pursuits from the traditional to the high adventure.
Here are a handful of suggestions:
Free Fall
Skydive Sebastian’s planes fly far above the Atlantic, affording their passengers a chance to drop into Florida's eastern edge near the picturesque swimming cove of Sebastian Inlet. The company's hangar and flock of professional skydivers—some of whom boast more than 16,000 jumps––await flights at a 7-acre facility, where they host first-time tandem skydivers and operate a skydiving school for beginners interested in learning to skydive on their own through the Accelerated Freefall course. Meanwhile, experienced skydivers with a passion for the sport of skydiving can receive independent coaching to keep free-fall skills sharp. www.skydiveseb.com
Dive for Sunken Treasure
Snorkelers who venture into the crystalline waters around Vero Beach will discover undersea treasures, including colorful coral reefs, Spanish Main treasure and the sunken remains of a 19th century steamer ship! Approximately 400 feet off of scenic Central Beach rests the area's most famous shallow water wreck - the S.S. Breconshire. Also known as the "Boiler Wreck," this 300-foot-long ship was traveling to Tampa from New York when it collided with the reefs in 1894. The historic spot is popular with snorkelers due to the abundance of marine life that meander through the sunken ship, and because you can still clearly see the Breconshire’s powerful boilers and the distinctive shape of the bow. Besides undersea treasures, visitors can take to the beach and hunt for lost gold from the renowned 1715 Treasure Fleet. Millions of dollars worth of treasure has been recovered from the sands since the 1950s, however many historic shipwrecks are still unaccounted for. Even today, beachgoers can find priceless Spanish treasure beneath their feet.

By any measure, Vero Beach/Indian River County is an angler’s mecca, but let us recommend Farm 13/Stick Marsh Reservoir, which boats areputation as one of the most bountiful and beautiful bass lakes in Florida. This 6,700-acre reservoir offers unsurpassed catch-and-release.
Hands On Eco Tours
Explore the mangroves by the Environmental Learning Center in a “see through canoe” where you’ll learn about oysters and more in the Indian River Lagoon estuary system – the most biodiverse in North America. You’ll likely also spy manatees, dolphins and sea birds on a classic pontoon tour to Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge (the nation’s first national wildlife refuge).
Rope ‘Em In
Florida Tech’s High Ropes Challenge Course is located on 86 acres in Fellsmere, and is open to the public by reservation. Group leadership training and teambuilding events take place in a variety of venues, which include High Ropes, Leadership Reaction, Marine Obstacle, and Air Assault Courses. These are military spec courses, which provide an exhilarating physical and mental challenge for all.
Surf’s Up
The waters off Vero Beach present some of the best surfing in Florida, and offer the ideal getaway for a group of wave-ridin’ pals. You can find spots appropriate for beginners, and at least one place that rip-curl fanatics give “mythic status.” Drop in at milder spots like Humiston Park, Jaycee Park and Wabasso Beach Park. They’re all within eight miles of each other on the barrier island. If you want a serious challenge, head a few clicks north to the Monster Hole at Sebastian Inlet. Florida Surf Museum says this break is “where the reality and the hype come together.” Surfing is seasonal, with summer not providing much. If you don’t surf, grab a spot on the sand and spectate.
Swinging Time
Nearly two-dozen golf courses are clustered around Vero Beach, a few of which are situated on the barrier island and provide terrific ocean views. Some are members-only, some are affiliated with resorts, some are public, all are well kept and scenic. The best options for easy access golf are: Sebastian Municipal Golf Course which has spent $2 million on improvements in the last few years; Sandridge Golf Club and Vista Plantation Golf Club.
Locked and Loaded
If your party hankers for the report of a rifle or pistol, or the whoosh of arrows, government-owned Indian River County Shooting Range provides a wide array of safety-first facilities in a controlled sporting environment. It has 35 pistol stations and 29 rifle stations, with various target ranges. There’s a five-stand sporting clay range, an archery range and air rifle and pellet gun target facility. Bang bang ‘til your trigger finger taps out.

In January 2019, Major League Baseball assumed control of Historic Dodgertown — the Brooklyn/L.A. Dodgers spring training home until 2008 — and renamed it after color-barrier-breaking Dodger Jackie Robinson. MLB has infused new focus and purpose into the storied facility. The complex — which consists of 6,500-seat Holman Stadium, several fields and indoor baseball facilities — is a year-round hub of amateur athletic development. Visitors can attend a series of youth/collegiate baseball events and tournaments. Even if you don’t take one in, the place is well worth visiting.
