The Old Powderhouse Inn
St. Augustine, Florida
Incredible history, beautiful accommodations, extraordinary breakfasts, gracious hosts and a perfect location
by Steven Skelley & Thomas Routzong
St. Augustine, Florida is one of the most unique places we have ever visited. Its history as the oldest city in the United States combined with its waterfront location and charming accommodations makes it both a Bucket List destination and a favorite place to return to and enjoy again and again.
If you are staying in St. Augustine, The Old Powderhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast is an excellent choice with an incredible history, beautiful accommodations, extraordinary breakfasts, gracious hosts and a perfect location in the heart of the Historic District.
Owners Katie and Kal Kalieta describe The Old Powderhouse Inn Bed & breakfast as a “charming turn-of-the-century Victorian Bed and Breakfast Inn in the heart of St. Augustine's beautiful Historic District. Towering pecan and oak trees shade verandas, courtyards, and gardens where you can relax with a cool drink, listen to the passing horse-drawn carriages, and let your imagination take you back through centuries of St. Augustine history.”
We couldn’t have described it any better! The historic structure is simply beautiful and the atmosphere is relaxing and friendly. Katie told us that they strive for a vibe that is “full of positive energy along with a homey atmosphere and welcoming spirits. “
The rooms at the Old Powderhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast have distinct names and stories behind them according to Kal. “The Miranda Room was named after a repeat guest’s family member who she traced back to living in St. Augustine in the 1600’s. So, when we renovated this room we renamed it The Miranda Room. Our guest supplied a copy of her family genealogy chart, which she had been working on when we first met, plus other memorabilia from her family's history - they are all in the room!”
The Kalieta’s have furnished their home with beautiful furniture, art and antiques. When asked for a story behind one of the pieces. Katie said, “We have several pieces that are antiques or family heirlooms. However, one item that is close to my heart is a wonderful picture of a conquistador, which also happens to adorn a wall in The Miranda Room. This stunning picture was donated to us by another repeat guest. As the story goes, the picture was apparently in his family ever since he could remember and when both his parents passed away his only request was to have this picture. He said that he had admired and been drawn to it all his life. He wrapped it up and brought it to me - I was deeply touched and still am. We believe a ‘spirit’ came with the picture. Ever since it has adorned the wall in The Miranda Room strange happenings have been reported from guests staying in it: Nothing scary or evil - just unexplained happenings.”
We found breakfast at The Old Powderhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast to be a delight.Guests are seated at tables for two where they can choose to be as private or as conversational as they choose to be. Within moments of being seated by Katie, everyone was engaged in friendly and humorous conversation during our stay. Guests were also sharing tips on their favorite local attractions and restaurants.
Katie and Kal describe the multi-dish breakfast experience as full gourmet style in which they “plan and prepare them from scratch right here in our kitchen. We also bake eight variety's of sweet muffins for breakfast and six varieties of cookies, for afternoon refreshments - all made from scratch.”
Senior Travelers hold a special place in the Kalieta’s heart. “We appreciate and love and understand the seniors – after all, we are of that generation. We have charming, comfortable, clean guest rooms, a full, delicious breakfast. We attend to dietary restrictions as well. Our location is perfect. We have on-site free parking and gracious hospitality!”

If you may be wondering about the origin of the name The Old Powderhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast, there is a wonderful story behind that too! Under the Spanish rule in the 18th century, the property's structure housed the gunpowder used by the soldiers at the nearby fortress. An 1870 description by one-time slave Jack Smith verifed the location and thereafter the property was referred to as The Old Powder House Lot. The present structure which houses The Old Powderhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast was built in 1899 and retains much of the original character of the Flagler era - Victorian architecture, high ceilings, verandas, and elaborate wood work.
The Old Powderhouse Inn Bed & Breakfast is located at 38 Cordova Street Saint Augustine, Florida, USA 32084.
