From Native Americans to Spanish conquistadors to Generals Andrew Jackson and Zachary Taylor, Steinhatchee, Florida has held a unique place in Florida history. Even today, as many other areas are filling with modern gated communities and high-rise condos, Steinhatchee has somehow retained its old-Florida vibe.
If you are looking for that old-Florida vibe and a family-friendly place to relax and get away from it all, the Steinhatchee Landing Resort on Florida’s Gulf Coast is an excellent choice.
Steinhatchee Landing Resort founder and owner Dean Fowler planned the resort to have a special look and feel. “I came to Steinhatchee and found 35 acres here on the water. I wanted my resort to have the look of the 1920’s era. I phoned the University of Florida and they put me on the phone with their man who was an expert in buildings of that era. He helped me with the homes at Steinhatchee Landing Resort.”
Fowler designed more than 60 cottages and buildings on the property. Even though the accommodations look like they are from the 1920’s, they are actually filled with modern luxury amenities like a/c, gas fireplaces, and Jacuzzi tubs.
The grounds of the resort contain several unique touches. “I found an old hotel from 1851 that was about to be torn down so I bought it and harvested the wood. I used the wood from that old hotel in some of the cabins and in making the well near the koi pond. Some of our decorative areas were made from my grandmother’s and grandfather’s things. One is made from an old wagon wheel from the blacksmith’s shop,” Fowler told us.
That mix of old and new, historic and modern is all part of Fowler’s plan to create a luxury resort that somehow feels and looks like a historic community. “I wanted this to feel like a real community. I planted a garden like people living in the 1920’s would have,” Fowler said. “Steinhatchee Landing Resort is very family friendly. It was designed for families on vacation. We have many activities available to our guests. We have archery, horseshoes, volleyball, badminton, tennis, ping pong, fishing, boating, campfire rings, croquet, a petting farm, a swimming pool, a playground, swings, jogging trails, kayaking, canoeing, pontoon boat tours and a fitness center to name a few.”
