The first fantasy tennis experience with a former World #1 that comes to you
By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong
Everyone who plays sports wonders how they would do against a pro. Luckily, tennis players have a chance to not only play with a pro but to play with a guy who was the best player on the planet in his prime. Wilander On Wheels offers players of all levels the opportunity for a fantasy tennis experience with former World #1 Mats Wilander.
Tennis fans remember when Wilander shocked the tennis world by winning the French Open at just 17 years old. He went on the win a total of seven Grand Slam singles titles, a Grand Slam doubles title and three Davis Cups as a vital piece of Sweden's team. His steady, zen-like game and pinpoint accuracy earned him the world number one ranking. His graceful game has always been a pleasure to watch.
We asked Wilander On Wheels Cofounder and C.O.O. Cameron Lickle to tell us more.
How would you describe Wilander On Wheels in one sentence?
The first fantasy tennis experience with a former World #1 that comes to you and your backyard.
What can you tell us about the history of Wilander On Wheels?
The idea was created on a cocktail napkin one night seven years ago. I had met Mats in Sun Valley while training with a local guy. Mats had asked me if I would like to return to Sun Valley to prepare him for an exhibition match against Pete Sampras he was scheduled to play in Malaysia in a month. After a week of sparring, Mats brought up the idea that he had always wanted to travel the country in an RV playing tennis.
I remember how thrilled I was when I first hit with him that I loved the idea of bringing this experience to true fans of the sport thus Wilander on Wheels was created.
Fantasy camps existed where a person would have to pay $15,000+ to attend. They would be a week in length and a major inconvenience to attend. These camps were also created for a niche group of people. They would not allow the true fan of the sport to experience the opportunity to live a dream by hitting with a World #1.
We devised a program to make WOW affordable for every player to circumvent the ridiculous prices of the fantasy camps and to come to your backyard.
What do participants do during a Wilander On Wheels event?
We created a program that can be catered to every age and level of player. In a given day we run up to three 1.5hr sessions.
Drills have been created so every other ball is coming off Mats or my racket. We push players as hard as they would like to be pushed.
Sessions are limited to 8 players per session (four players per court) to ensure their time spent on court is intimate and personal. Each group of four players are normally of similar level and rotate courts every ten minutes.
Once the day is done, we have lunch or dinner with all the participants to give them an opportunity to pick the mind of Mats.
How does it make you feel to interact on court with tennis enthusiasts?
For me, it is almost better than real life. We get the best version of everyone and they get the best version of us. We are excited to see them and they are excited to see us. Injecting adrenaline into the sport and getting smiling faces there is nothing better. Work is doing something when you would rather be somewhere else. WOW is not work.
What Wilander On Wheels events are planned?
